Vezlar™ – Environmentally Safe Metal Protection!

Tank trucks carry liquid calcium chloride for use in dust suppression and de-icing applications across the country and are subject to chemical reactions leading to weakening of the aluminum tank shell and creating leaks from holes and cracks. Unprotected aluminum tanks in this service are subject to corrosion damage shortening their useful life whereas Don Aiello, plant manager of Lafarge’s Millhaven calcium chloride terminal, feels that when coated with Vezlar™, these tanks can easily last 50% longer.

Vezlar™ is a highly elastomeric modified asphalt emulsion that is spray applied to the metal surface. Brant Corrosion coated one of Don’s tanks and Don says, “the product was real easy to apply and formed a complete seamless coating, even in hard to reach places”.

During the summer Don’s calcium chloride tank trucks routinely carry over 1.8 million litres of product per season and are in service everyday during the dust control season. “Having a truck out of service with a leak is a real big problem and it costs the company a lot of money”, says Don, “so I feel protecting these tanks with Vezlar is a good investment”.

“Calcium chloride is applied to the road through sophisticated spray distributor equipment and it’s critical there are no particles, chips or corrosion products loose in the tank that can clog the nozzles”, Don points out.

Vezlar™ produces a seamless rubberized coating that strongly adheres to the aluminum tank walls. Both the high bonding strength and Vezlar™’s superior elasticity and elastic recovery means the product will not chip or peel from the metal surface, providing years of protection.

Vezlar™ is also an environmentally safe product. Because there are no VOC or organics that can leach out of the coating, it is an ideal protective coating for tankers who’s products are applied in the environment.
