Solution Mixing

Mixing the “Part B” solution.

Proper application of Liquid Rubber’s Drylar™, Daclar™ and Vezlar™ depends on correct preparation of the ‘Part B’ solution. The ‘Part B’ solution is an inorganic salt solution of calcium chloride and locally available tap water. The concentration is important to controlling the rapid - setting nature of the membrane system.

Liquid Rubber recommends the calcium chloride solution strength of the Part B solution is 10%. To achieve this a 20kg bag of 77-80% calcium chloride flake, available from Liquid Rubber Industries is added to a standard 205 litre drum. The following procedure is recommended to mix the calcium chloride solution.

  1. fill a clean empty plastic drum to approximately half way with water at ambient temperature
  2. slowly add approximately ½ a 20kg bag of calcium chloride to the water while stirring
  3. continue mixing either manually with a stir paddle or using the pump on by-pass for 5 minutes (the solution will appear milky white and will form soapy like bubbles)
  4. allow the solution to stand for 5-10minutes until the majority of the bubbles have gone
  5. slowly add the balance of the calcium chloride to the drum while mixing, continue mixing for a further 5 minutes
  6. let the solution stand until the bubbles have subsided, approximately 10 minutes
  7. fill the drum to within 6-10cm of the top of the drum with water
  8. mix for approximately 5 minutes
  9. the Part B solution is now ready for use

During the mixing of the Part B solution ensure personnel wear protective eye wear and rubber or neoprene coated gloves.

The ideal mix ratio is 1 kg. of calcium chloride per 10 litres of water.

Caution! Not all brands of calcium chloride are the same dry weight concentration, the above is based on a 77-80% product recommended by Liquid Rubber.

Calcium chloride solutions are aggressive to metal and any spills should be washed down with water and cleaned up as soon as possible.
